Accessible Home Design

"Accessibility", as it pertains to the design of buildings, is a term that most of us are somewhat familiar with. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (the "ADA") mandates that most buildings used by the public be designed for ease of use by persons with many kinds of disabilities. We've all seen accessible parking spaces, ramps, and washrooms in retails stores, airports, and office buildings.

Countertop Burners

Homes, too, should incorporate design features and products that are easier to use by people of all ages and abilities. It's a concept called "universal design". For most people however, the image of an accessible home is one of fluorescent lights, wheelchair ramps, and white porcelain plumbing fixtures - more like a clinic than a home.

Countertop Burners

But an accessible home needn't be like that at all. In fact, many design features and fixtures that work well for accessibility are also well suited for just about anyone. Accessible design is often just plain good design - a well-integrated accessible home design can and should extend a home's usability through more than just one phase of family life.

Start In The Kitchen

Making a house more accessible isn't particularly difficult or expensive. You might even have some universal design principals at work in your kitchen now.

"Side-by-side" refrigerators are more usable by a person in a wheelchair - unlike a unit with the freezer mounted on top. Inside the refrigerator, sliding shelves eliminate the need to reach all the way to the back to retrieve what you want.

A very common disabling condition associated with aging is reduced physical strength, which can make cooking in a large pot difficult if it has to be lifted into and out of the sink to fill with water. Instead of a standard kitchen faucet, install a "goose-neck" spout that allows the pot to be filled without lifting it into the sink. And place the cooktop nearby so that the pot can be easily slid across the countertop to the burner - no lifting required.

The latest in dishwasher design is the "drawer" type like those from Fisher & Paykel and KitchenAid. Drawer dishwashers don't require as much bending over to load and unload and because there's no door in the way, they're more easily used from a sitting position.

Staying Home

As the American population ages and as housing prices escalate, many homeowners are trying to stay in their homes longer. Too often however, family homes are primarily designed for young families and become rapidly obsolete when they can no longer provide the convenience and safety that older citizens need. It's an unfortunate result of a "disposable home" mentality - but that's a topic for a future article!

A few simple design changes can make almost any home better able to support changing lifestyles, as ease of use and safety become important issues. One of the easiest is the installation of blocking for grab bars at appropriate places in the bath when the house is built. These simple and inexpensive structural supports are used for the future installation of grab bars, which provide increased safety in showers, tubs, and at toilets.

Another easy change is using "lever-type" door hardware - popular because of its looks and ease of use but also a requirement for persons with reduced strength or restricted mobility. Widening the doors a few inches can also extend the useable life of the house. Standard thirty-inch doors aren't wide enough for wheelchairs and can be difficult for anyone with trouble walking. A thirty-six inch wide door solves both problems and makes moving furniture a lot easier, too.

Ups and Downs

Stairs are the biggest obstacle to making any home accessible. Typically, a fully accessible home must be all on one level - no stairs, step-downs, or even door thresholds. But a one-level home is more costly to build than a two-story and may require a larger property.

A better solution is a residential elevator. Sound expensive? Compared to the cost of a one-level home on a larger lot, an elevator is a very reasonable expense. It only adds about sixty square feet to the floor plan, and enables easy access to the first floor, the second floor, and the basement. Even better, only the elevator shaft need be installed now - the actual elevator equipment doesn't have to be in place until it's needed, maybe many years down the road.

Easier Than You Might Think

In most cases, accessible or universal design isn't much more than good design sense and a desire to make houses usable by everyone - and isn't that a worthy goal for any house, regardless of the current occupants? Our houses are sometimes a little too disposable - we can easily make them less so by making them more functional for a wide range of homeowners with and without disabilities. We'll all benefit from design that helps people stay in their homes longer.

Microwave Buying Advice

Microwaves are not just for reheating and popcorn anymore - they have become an essential appliance in every kitchen. Some new features like convection technology have made the ovens more versatile, while others like SpeedCook have made it possible to reduce cooking times dramatically. Aside from the cooking technology, there are a lot of features to consider when buying your next microwave oven.

Countertop Burners

Power and Size

Countertop Burners

Microwave power is measured in watts. Microwaves can range from as low as 600W to as high as 1300W. More wattage means faster cooking times, but the difference of a hundred watts in either direction is negligible. If you'll be doing more than reheating in your microwave, look for models that offer at least 800W, which is the bare minimum recommended for many recipes.

The capacity of a microwave is measured in cubic feet and can range from .5 to over 2 cf. Singles, couples and people who use a microwave for occasional reheating and defrosting will be fine with compact models, which generally range from 0.5-0.8 cubic feet. For frequent microwave users or cooks who rely on the microwave to cook larger quantities of food on a regular basis, mid-sized microwaves (0.9-1.6 cf ) and full-sized microwaves (1.7-2.3 cf) are the better option. Typically, the larger the interior capacity, the larger the overall physical dimensions, with the exception being microwaves that double as convection ovens. The fan used in convection cooking adds to the size of the microwave and a convection microwave with .9 cf capacity will be larger than a basic microwave with the same .9 cf capacity. Beware, too, advertised capacity ratings, as manufacturers often include corners in their cubic feet rating that don't contribute to usable space.

Where will it go?

Today's microwaves fit in your kitchen in a variety of ways. As their name suggests, countertop microwaves sit on your kitchen counter. While they take up more physical space than over the range (OTR), built-in or under-the-cabinet microwaves, they usually offer more usable cooking space inside. If you have room on your countertop or a utility cart, a countertop microwave will give you the most cooking capacity and is the best choice for frequent users who rely on the microwave for a lot more than the occasional reheat.

Over-the-range models get the microwave off your countertop but don't hold as much inside. It is important to know that OTR models come with a built-in range hood vent. The hood vents found in OTR microwaves don't work as well as standard range hood vents, in part because they don't provide coverage for the front burners. If you use your range a lot, what you gain in counter space will be lost in ventilation. Is something always simmering on the stovetop? Don't give up a full-sized hood vent in exchange for an OTR microwave. Instead, consider a microwave that can be mounted under or inside of a cabinet. It offers the same interior capacity as OTR microwaves without the hood-vent drawbacks. If you don't need a large-capacity microwave, or don't have space on the countertop, an under-the-cabinet model is an excellent space-saving choice.

Cooking Technology

Be sure to choose a microwave that offers you a minimum of three power levels. Generally, these are High, for regular cooking (100% power); Medium, for simmering (50% power), and Low or Defrost (usually about 10%-30% power). If the model you're looking at comes with more levels, that's even better it won't necessarily add to the cost.

Microwaves with convection technology include a heating element and a fan. The fan circulates the air, which helps crisp skins and brown foods (no more chewy leftover pizza). Convection technology adds significantly to the price of a microwave (0 to 0) and the fan adds to its physical size. If you turn to the microwave more than you turn to your oven, the convection technology is worth the investment for the versatility you'll get, not to mention the option of not heating your standard oven on hot days.

You'll also find microwave ovens today that feature SpeedCook technology. SpeedCook microwaves use halogen or quartz lights to heat food, which may call to mind the EasyBake Ovens from your childhood. However, you won't have to wait an hour for a cupcake; cooking with a SpeedCook microwave can be up to three times faster than your conventional oven, plus you don't have to preheat it. If you're a heavy microwave user now, you may want to invest in a SpeedCook microwave for the ultimate in convenience and time-saving meal preparation.

Some microwaves offer new inverter technology that keeps the power level constant during the cooking process, versus the traditional microwave method of cycling power on and off. Inverter technology is billed to help microwaves cook food more evenly, but if you've got a turntable and are familiar with your power levels, you won't see a large difference with inverter technology.

Cooking Functions

Microwave cooking functions run the gamut from the basic defrost to advanced sensor technology that prevents overcooking. Next to reheating, defrosting is the most frequent use for the microwave. Using your microwave to defrost meats and frozen leftovers can shave hours off meal preparation. Look for microwaves that feature a timed defrost option or defrost that will automatically turn off when the defrosting is finished.

Advanced sensor technology turns your microwave off when it senses the food is too hot, which prevents overcooking during the reheating process. These sensors add to the cost of the microwave ( to ), but experts say the sensors do work. If you've removed one too many rubbery dishes from your microwave, spend the dollars and be happier with your end results.

No matter which microwave you purchase, you'll want it to offer a turntable to ensure even cooking and reheating. Traditional turntables are round pieces of glass on a motorized loop that rotates the food in a microwave as it is heated. This helps the microwaves to penetrate evenly and heat the food more efficiently. Some microwaves now replace traditional round turntables with rectangular slabs that slide side-to-side. Another feature to look for is turntable control. If you regularly cook with oversized or oddly shaped dishes, you'll benefit from a microwave that gives you the option of an off/on button for the turntable. When the turntable is off, you can fit oversized or oddly-shaped dishes into the microwave.

Controls

Microwave controls are now as varied as the units themselves, but microwaves with advanced controls are only as useful as your ability and tendency to use them. Most manufacturers offer pre-programmed controls for popular functions, like popcorn or a baked potato, which you may use often. Other microwaves offer a delayed-start option, which makes it easier to time meals when you're using the microwave for only a course or two. SpeedCook microwaves often come with pre-programmed recipes, which is useful because SpeedCook times can be much faster than traditional oven preparation times. Purchase a microwave with the minimum of control features you need, plus a few more you think you might use. If you have small children, look for models with child locks that prevent the microwave turning on without items in it.

How To Diet: 9 Easy Tips To Learn How To Lose Weight The Healthy Way (As Well As The Correct Way)

There are right ways and wrong ways to do just about everything...whether you're knitting a sweater, changing the oil in your car, or dieting to lose weight. If you knit, but not well, perhaps you can cobble something together, but it won't be anything one would be proud to wear. When you're working on your car, you could totally mess up and add olive oil instead of motor oil and end up a whole lot worse off than when you started.

Countertop Burners

It's the same way with dieting. Unless you approach it correctly, you can work hard yet show poor results, as in the knitting example. Or, as with the oil, you can make mistakes which will cause you to gain weight, rather than lose it.

Countertop Burners

Let's go over a few principles of effective dieting so as to maximize your efforts:

1. Start your day off with a healthful breakfast. You've been "fasting" all night long and it's time to re-fuel. Don't think "eggs benedict" or "caviar and brie omelet"...think whole grain cereal bars and orange juice, or hard-boiled eggs and peanut butter on toast. The point is, make it simple, make it nutritious, and make it the first step toward a new you.

2. Picture this: you sit at a desk all morning. At noon you rush out for a 45 minute high-calorie, high-fat, high-sodium, expensive lunch during which you complain about the boss and his stupid new memo. You end by plopping down free money for a tip and rushing back to the office so you can sit all afternoon. How's that working for you? Consider packing your lunch instead of going out. (It's just possible your co-workers would be interested in joining you. Sit outside and get some fresh air and sunshine.)

3. If you do got out for lunch (or dinner), ask the waiter for a take-home box to be delivered with your meal. Divide the food before you start eating and take it home for dinner or lunch tomorrow. We're all eating much more than we need (or we wouldn't be talking about dieting).

4. Bring a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack with you. The donuts the rep brought will add calories and upset your sugar-insulin balance and leave you hungrier (and heavier) in a few hours. Also, most of the "office munchies" are high in fat and will raise your cholesterol. Try a serving size (read the label) of nuts, peanut butter on whole wheat crackers, fruit, vegetable chunks, or reduced fat cheese.

5. Have dinner as a family...put something in the crockpot in the morning before work. Serve foods restaurant style rather than family style. These means that you dish up food at the stove or countertop rather than from bowls and platters at the table. (No seconds please... you've had enough. Eat slowly so your brain has time to activate the hunger-full center of your brain.)

6. Use the "my-plate" method devised by the US Department of Agriculture: one half of the plate is for fruits and vegetables; one-fourth for protein, such as beef, chicken, or beans; the last fourth is for starch (bread, pasta, rice). Look for whole grain breads, pastas and cereals.

7. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Develop a habit of motion. Walk where you can, use the stairs when possible, take the long way whenever you can, play with the kids or the animals, walk with the family after dinner or take a lunch time walk alone or with a co-worker. There are many things you can do to burn up some of those extra calories.

8. Set realistic goals for yourself. Aim for 1-3 pounds of weight loss per week. If you lose more than that, you are probably breaking down muscle. If your caloric and healthy fat intake is too low, your metabolism will slow down.

9. Get a good nights sleep...the hormones that control appetite are produced in concentrated form during sleep

The Best BBQ Islands - Styles and Options

Have you considered a BBQ Island as the centerpiece of your overall backyard plans? Most of us are somewhere in the middle when it comes to our backyard design ideas. You may want more than just a nice grill, but you really don't want or need a full-blown top of the line outdoor kitchen, or maybe you can't spend that much money. The good news is that there are lots of options in the middle. Possibly the simplest, easiest, and most efficient options are found in the large family of BBQ islands. There are grill islands for under 00, and there are large sophisticated multi component outdoor kitchen islands that can top ,000. Once again, most of us are somewhere in the middle.

Countertop Burners

What exactly IS a Barbeque Island?
BBQ islands are known by several names, including outdoor kitchen islands, grill islands and barbeque islands (or barbecue islands - I'm really not sure which spelling is correct, but both seem to be acceptable). Some models are easily recognizable as islands, while others are so large they look more like full-scale kitchens, only outdoors. They are essentially pre fabricated packages of different components related to outdoor kitchens. Some are made to be added on to, with the more pieces you add, the more the cost goes up.

Countertop Burners

Some are fixed and are pretty much "as is". With some manufacturers and suppliers, you can choose from a list of compatible options such as a built-in grill, outdoor refrigerators, side burners, storage options, and more. Within the particular design limitations, select the features you want, and basically design your BBQ island to your specifications. With some styles you can also choose the base veneer material as well as the countertop material. Not all islands have this flexibility, so choose wisely if you want to have a hand in the design of your model.

As usual, the more features, and the nicer those features are, the more you pay. But compared to the cost of a true custom designed and built outdoor kitchen, a BBQ island is a cost-effective way to go.

A very basic, no frills BBQ island, made to hold a built-in grill and not much else, can cost under 00. That's without the grill, which will add 0 to 00 more, depending on burners and options.

A medium-sized BBQ island - about 6 feet long - including a built-in storage cabinet, an additional two drawer storage area, and a refrigerator, can be bought for under 00. The built-in grill is not included, but a tile countertop is! Add the grill and you have a nice, modest sized outdoor kitchen at a relatively modest cost.

If you have the room in your yard and in your budget, you can get q very nice larger sized BBQ island, with over 18 feet of raised bar serving area for just over 00. If you want to blow that model out with a very nice large built-in grill, refrigerator, side burner, multiple storage areas, and even a sink, you can still stay under ,000! Yes, that's a nice chunk of change, but considering what you're getting, not a bad investment.

The point is that you can have a very nice outdoor kitchen without having to incur the expense of building the entire kitchen. Take a close look at BBQ islands before you give up on the idea of adding a great kitchen in your backyard.
